VOLUNTEER POSITION: Preschool Assistant Teacher
We have an opportunity for a dynamic volunteer in a pre-school in Tzanjomel, a small Mayan community about a 30 minute walk up from the pueblo Tzununa on Lake Atitlan. This is the first school in the community and we opened in January 2012. We follow the Guatemalan school year from January-October. The kids are taught in Spanish and also have teacher who speaks Kakchiquel. As a volunteer, you will work closely with the two teachers to help in the daily lessons and classroom activity including reading and writing, art, recreation, singing and dancing. The children range in age from 2 and a half to six and a half years old and we vary programs based on the age and skill level of the child.
3 month minimum, Monday through Friday from 8:30 to noon. 6 to 10 month preferred commitment

It is a 30 minute hike to the school and a possible boat ride depending on where you choose to live at the lake.
We are in a Mayan community and it is important to be respectful through demeanor and dress.

VOLUNTEER POSITION: EFL INSTRUCTOR
Contribute as an English instructor to the training programs offered through Amigos de Santa Cruz (www.amigosdesantacruz.org) in the Kaqchikel-speaking village of Santa Cruz la Laguna on beautiful Lake Atitlan in the highlands of Guatemala. Volunteer will teach culinary arts students (4 hrs./wk.), secondary scholarship students (4 hrs./wk.) and offer an adult class (3 hrs./wk.). Emphasis is on beginning and intermediate level conversation skills. Students are Spanish speaking, mostly under educated and lacking basic skills.
Dates: Jan. 1st - Nov. 1st, 2014
Location: Santa Cruz la Laguna, Guatemala
Teach approximately 12 hours per week, assist with curriculum development, work with training center staff, recruit and supervise short-term volunteers as conversation partners.
Gain valuable teaching experience working in the developing world in a small indigenous community in a spectacularly scenic and fascinating environment. Candidates need to be flexible, resourceful, creative, energetic, have excellent cross-cultural communication skills, be self-directed and organized. Volunteer will need to cover living expenses, medical insurance, transportation costs. Food costs approx. $100/mo. Santa Cruz is accessible only by boat and foot travel and boats between villages are the primary modes of transportation. There is an expatriate community below the village on the lakeshore with some tourist traffic (source of short-term English speaking volunteers).
TESL certified, demonstrated teaching ability, at least intermediate level Spanish language ability, curriculum development experience.
Preference for 3rd world experience, familiarity with Rosetta Stone software.

VOLUNTEER POSITION: Economic Development Coordinator
We have an opportunity for a dynamic volunteer to work in our newly established vocational education center. This position will focus on helping to develop a small business model for CECAP, the newly established Vocational Center, in Santa Cruz la Laguna. the model includes skills development in various craft forms including sewing, welding, carpentry, baking and bead work. Products will be developed that can be sold both locally and on the international market. Training of local women and youth will include basic skills development, production of local crafts and small business skills.
6 month minimum, 12 month preferred commitment (negotiable)
