Because of the isolated location of Santa Cruz, the village has missed out on development opportunities that would have been advantageous for the community and its natural environment. A rapidly growing population, land not well suited for agriculture, the  absence of a waste management system and a critical shortage of wood fuel and potable water are all major problems which impact Santa Cruz. Amigos works closely with community leaders to seek sustainable solutions to these problems. Our work in this area is a priority and includes  distribution of fuel efficient stoves  and clean water producing filters, support for a drainage treatment plant and a recycling/ garbage project. We also work to educate the younger generation on environmental issues.

ONIL STOVES PROJECT

Amigos began distributing the Onil Stove to families in the fall of 2005. This stoves are designed to save 70% in wood consumption. As of 2007, Amigos has distributed 400 stoves to families in our SC communities. Families pay a small portion of the costs and sign an agreement to maintain and use the stoves properly. This has been an extremely popular project.

WATER FILTERS PROJECT

Amigos promotes access to clean drinking water among the SC communities. We have distributed approximately 350 water filters to our families. These filters are very inexpensive and simple to use. They provide families with up to 10 gallons of clean water in a 24 hour period.Again, families must pay a small portion, participate in a family hygiene workshop and learn how to use and maintain their filters. There has been a notable drop in illnesses related to parasites such as diarrhea, and stomach illnesses among children as a result of the use of these filters in our communities.
